Overview at a glance
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship was launched to stop talented students from dropping out after class 8 because of money. The scheme rewards both means and merit: your family must fall within the income ceiling, and you must clear a state-level test. Once selected, the support continues from class 9 to class 12 as long as you are promoted and keep up your marks, which makes it one of the most dependable school-level scholarships in India.

What the scholarship gives you
Selected students receive 12,000 rupees a year, paid as 1,000 rupees a month, from class 9 through class 12, transferred directly to the student’s bank account. Around one lakh scholarships are awarded each year across states and union territories, so the scheme reaches a large number of students from economically weaker sections every cycle.
Eligibility criteria
Check every point below before you spend time on the application. Most rejections happen because a basic eligibility condition was not met, not because of weak marks.

- You need at least 55 percent in the class 7 final examination, with a 5 percent relaxation for reserved categories.
- Your parental income from all sources must not exceed 3,50,000 rupees per year.
- You must qualify the state NMMS examination held for class 8 students.
- Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools and similar fully funded residential schools are not eligible.
- To keep the scholarship from class 9 onward, you must be promoted each year and maintain the required marks.

Tips to strengthen your application
Exam dates change from state to state, so follow your State Education Department or SCERT for the exact NMMS exam schedule and admit card. There is no fixed syllabus, but questions follow the class 7 and class 8 level, so practice reasoning for the Mental Ability Test and core subjects for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. After selection, renew on time each year and keep your bank account active and Aadhaar-seeded so the payment does not fail.
Important dates
Deadlines are the single biggest reason strong candidates miss out. Note the timeline below and always confirm the exact dates on the official portal, since they can change each cycle.
| Event | Timeline |
|---|---|
| NMMS exam | Usually between November and February, varies by state |
| NSP application opens | Around the middle of the year |
| Last date to apply | As per the NSP and your state notification |
| Disbursement | After verification, paid through PFMS |
Applying for any scholarship is mostly about preparation and timing. Read the eligibility list once more, keep your documents ready, register early and submit well before the deadline. If you meet the criteria, apply, and keep a backup option ready so your studies are never delayed.
