502 Bad Gateway Canvas | Current Status (March 30, 2026)
As of today, Monday, March 30, 2026, there is an active technical issue causing 502 Bad Gateway errors on Canvas. According to the official Instructure status report, the issue is specifically impacting New Quizzes.
While the main dashboard and most course pages may still load, students and instructors are receiving 502 errors when trying to open, take, or grade assessments built with the New Quizzes engine.
## Current Status (March 30, 2026)
-
Status: Investigating / Identified. Instructure engineers confirmed the issue at 09:13 MDT (local time).
-
Scope: Intermittent to major “Bad Gateway” and timeout errors when accessing New Quizzes.
-
Fix Progress: A fix is currently being implemented, but the service has not yet returned to “Operational” status.
## What You Can Do Right Now
1. The “Hard Refresh”
If you are an instructor trying to edit a quiz, or a student who just got kicked out, try a Hard Refresh (Ctrl + F5 on Windows or Cmd + Shift + R on Mac). This forces your browser to bypass its local cache and ask the server for a fresh (and hopefully working) version of the page.

2. Avoid “New Quizzes” for the Next Hour
If you have a deadline, try to wait at least 30–60 minutes before attempting to submit. Submitting during a 502 error can sometimes result in “failed uploads,” meaning your answers might not reach the server even if the page eventually loads.
3. Check for Local Browser Conflicts
If your classmates are getting in but you aren’t, the 502 might be caught in your browser’s “memory”:
-
Incognito Mode: Open Canvas in a private/incognito window. If it works there, you need to clear your browser’s Cookies and Cache.
-
Switch Browsers: If you are using Chrome, try Firefox or Safari. Canvas often performs differently on different engines during partial outages.
